PathoLase PinPointe™ FootLaser™Toenail fungus infection, also known as onychomycosis, is a common condition among people of all ages. These infections are caused by certain bacteria that may be a result of genetics, aging, trauma or poor foot care. They may also be related to diabetes.
Symptoms of a toenail fungus infection vary depending on the type of infection, but are usually mild. The nail usually becomes thick, brittle, discolored and sometimes split. Treatment is usually sought for cosmetic purposes, but an untreated infection can worsen and eventually lead to difficulty wearing shoes and walking. Toenail infections affect an estimated 40 million people in the US. Despite how common they are, completely effective treatment is hard to accomplish. Traditional topical antifungal medications are not usually successful because they cannot properly reach the infection. Since nails grow slowly, treatment would be long and often unresponsive. Oral medications are also now available to treat toenail infections. These antifungal medications go through the body to penetrate the nail and are often effective within days of beginning treatment. Topical medications are now used as additional treatment in combination with the oral medicines. Although more successful, these treatments can take up to three months and have a high rate of recurrence. Surgery is also performed in some cases to remove the nail, but this must be done in addition to oral therapy. Simply removing the nail does not treat the infection. A combination of oral, topic and surgical treatment would be considered most effective in treating a toenail fungus infection. This rigorous treatment can be considered excessive and often cannot prevent future infections. At Northern California Orthopedic Center patients do not have to undergo these traditional treatment methods. New technology has made treatment of toenail infections easy and long-lasting. Using the PathoLase PinPointe FootLaser, patients can experience immediate results from a simple procedure with no pain and no side effects. The PathoLase laser kills the pathogens that cause toenail fungus, which not only treats existing infections, but also helps to prevent them in the future. The PathoLase PinPointe FootLaser is faster and more effective than any other toenail infection treatment available today. There’s no reason to live with the unsightly effects of a fungal infection any longer. Call us today to schedule an appointment and see what our doctors can do for you.
